Looks like running XP on your Mini-note is pretty awesome on the Mini-note. I’m sure HP had their hands tied by MS and had to offer Vista at first…
bsumpter:
From the HP “Invent” BIOS screen to usable WinXP desktop: 35.72 seconds
From the “Windows XP” loading screen to usable WinXP desktop: 25.56 seconds
Not too shabby! I have not really tweaked XP either - this is a standard install with my normal trimmings (Gmail Notifier, Nod32, S3 Video Tray, etc). It’s not bloated, but I made no efforts to trim it down. This is the 5200 rpm HDD as well - those of you with the 7200 rpm should notice faster boot times.
Movies play fine in XP, guys! I’m not sure about HD, but all of my normal 600 - 900 MB movie files play GREAT! They do skip a little when playing over the WLAN, but that probably has to do with my crappy wifi network. Running local from the HDD they’re perfect. CPU load is around 30 - 35% when playing a movie. “Contact” is playing in the background right now as I type this.

I have mine working with everything installed now too. This thing is incredibly snappy. I was actually going to return it because SuSe worked like crap. I had a lot of stuttering issues when I was typing and things were buggy and crashed a lot. I have absolutely no issues now in XP. The Wifi light even works now (sad that it doesn’t even work with the default OS).
Even the screen seems so much better. The default SuSe theme had really big icons and weird text and Windows doesn’t have any of these problems.

I get 2 hours of battery life in both linux and XP. It’s actually quite fast in XP…I’m surprised. I’ve installed Office Ultimate 2007 and it loads that up quicker than my Tablet PC that’s running a Core 2 Duo processor! Right now I’m running Rhapsody, Word 2007, Pidgin, Yahoo Widgets, Internet Explorer, and Google Talk on it at the same time and it seems fine. It’s still with the base 1 gig ram and 120 gig 5400 HDD, so you guys shouldn’t worry–this machine has enough power. Coming out of sleep is fast too, and boot-up is about 40-45 seconds. The only thing I’ve noticed is that the fan stays on most of the time. Very rarely does it become silent. Not a huge deal but something to be aware of.
I’m seriously thinking of selling my slooowww HP 2710p tablet and keeping this as my main laptop…hmmmm
This is great news and alleviates pretty much all my worries about the device.

Since HP is directly shipping from China right now, your mini-note has to go through Customs on it’s journey…which can add two or three days to the travel time.
I called to check on my ship date (5/5 now…) and the service rep I should receive it on the 9th… I asked him why will it take so long when I paid for two day shipping, and he said it was because of customs..
If you paid for the extra for shipping you can call and ask for a refund since it’s not going to get here any quicker…

Over on forums.mininoteuser.com they’re reporting that you’ll be able to order an XP install disc around May 15th, IF you bought the model with Vista Business, the KX870AT:
Guest: Can the HP 2133 Mini-note be loaded with Windows XP before shipping since my business uses many programs not compatible with Windows Vista or SUSE. And if so, will the Mini-note include the XP License and XP Install disc?
Jay: Great question…..
Jay: The free media for XP will be offered on or around the 15th of May (And hopefully sooner)…….and this will be offered for the Vista business featured model in the mini 2133 model for the free media from XP. You can order now (and I highly suggest this, as the newly released 2133 models have been quite popular since they were introduced last Tuesday), and then call for the media to our business tech line with a confirmation order number on or around the 15th of May.
Guest: Great, so I can order via the web now and then call for the XP option.
Jay: You sure can.
This is great news as XP is definitely going to run better than Vista.

Laptop Mag is reporting that the HP 2133 will have a Windows XP option and XP drivers available in mid-May (nothing certain though). Also planned are pre-configurable models so we hopefully we can get one with Linux and with the specs of the the KX870AT (1.6Ghz processor and 2GB RAM).

The HP 2133 is on sale now! The final price range is $499 for a 1Ghz, 512MB RAM, and 4GB SSD drive, to one that is $849. For some reason the $849 one is bettered or equaled on every spec by the $749 model except in HD capacity.
The screen resolution is actually 1280×768 in a 8.9-inch screen, and the $499 model has a 4GB solid state drive. All-in-all i’m pretty impressed with this offering. It caters to consumers looking for a good replacement to the eeePC, and professionals looking for something that doesn’t feel like a toy.
Here’s HP’s press kit for the 2133.
I ordered the KX870AT (the $749 one) model today today, and it should ship out on the 17th according to the site. I’ll post pics when I have them!

Looks like the new HP 2133 will be available for purchase on April 7th, starting at $549 and going up to $849. I’m a little bummed they’re skipping the Intel’s Atom processors and using the VIA C7-M series for cpus and the Chrome 9 Chipset.
According to the announcement only SuSE linux and Vista are available, which is disappointing. At least they are offering a *nix variant, and I would imagine you could install XP on it.
Price wise I think it’s pretty reasonable for the quality of the build. The all aluminum case, near full size keyboard, and 1366×766 wxga screen is pretty awesome.
I’m pretty excited for these to come out!
